Debunking the Myth of The Wasted Vote

with 5 comments

The title alone says it all. With 12 days to go before the elections, this is THE biggest mentality that needs to be changed. More times than not, the supporters of the top 2 guys.. the Anak ng Diyos Manny Villar and the Anak ni Ninoy and Cory Noynoy Aquino, will tell you that they’d rather vote for either of the two because if they vote for other supposedly better candidates that they LIKE, their vote might get wasted because that candidate might end up losing.

People, WAKE THE FUCK UP. This is one reason why surveys needs to be abolished. Thanks to SWS and Pulse Asia, people are now actually turning away from their original choice to a more winnable candidate because of the fear of their vote getting wasted. And while I can go on and rant about their bullshit, I won’t. Let’s stick to the point of this entry, an entry directed to the mentality of the Filipino people.

To quote Thomas Friedman from the NY Times.. “Everybody loves a Winner”  that alone says a lot. That is the mentality of the majority of the Filipino people. If Manny Pacquiao isn’t a 7 division world champion, we wouldn’t care would we? If Charice Pempengco or Arnel Pineda weren’t recognized internationally, would we even bother talking about them? That is our mentality.. kapit sa kung sino malakas. If you’re on top, I’m for you. If you’re not screw you and this is exactly what’s happening in the upcoming presidential election.

I’ve had the chance to talk to people who think this way and what I said is pretty simple. There’s no such thing as a wasted vote. A wasted vote only happens when you vote for someone  not because you think he’s the best choice but because he’s  likely gonna win. That is a wasted vote.To quote Bob Ong “Kung boboto ko dahil sa gusto ng iba, sino ang boboto sa gusto mo?”

BUT, if you go ahead and stand up for what you believe in, if you go ahead and stand up for what you think is right without thinking about what others might say or what the results might be come election then that IS NOT a wasted vote regardless of the result. The fact that you’ve actually voted and stood up for someone that you think deserves the post, then you’ve done your share in atleast trying to strive for change in our country. That’s why I salute the supporters of Nicanor Perlas, Eddie Villanueva, Richard Gordon and the others, because if you ask them on why they’re voting for their candidate, they’d be replying with a solid response on why they’ll be voting for them. But if you guys ask MOST (I’m not referring to all) supports of let’s say Noynoy or Villar.. well they’d give you two words.. “Wala lang” or a longer response which actually makes no sense like “ee kasi dalawa nalang silang naglalaban, ayoko naman manalo si Noynoy/Villar kaya ito nalang ang iboboto ko” That right there, is what you call bullshit.

To conclude this entry, I’ll just leave you guys with this..

.. when you vote for someone because you think he’s the best possible candidate that we have and that candidate lost,  then that doesn’t mean that you’ve wasted vote. It only means you’re a notch smarter than everybody else, because more likely than not, the popular candidate.. will be fucking up badly.

  1. Thank you for this intelligently written article. I found it just as I was pouring over dozens of websites as I filled out my sample ballot.

Do you mind if I share this article with my friends?

  4. Agree. Kaya yung mga tao na nangangampanya at sumusuporta ng todo kela Villanueva, Gordon, Gibo, Perlas, Delos Reyes, Madrigal na may mga tamang dahilan, yan ang hinahangaan ko talaga!

Villar is also a good leader in my honest opinion. The others, hmm.
